Excessive sweating in the armpit area can be disconcerting especially when you are in the workplace or in front of a big audience. Maybe armpits pads can help.
Perspiration is excreted by the skin as a waste product from excess fats and minerals in the body. This is a thermoregulation function of the sweat glands. Although sweating is normal, some conditions may affect the sweat glands to secrete more fluids. This over secretion reacts with other factors like hormones specifically in areas where sympathetic nerves are found. Excessive underarm sweating is clinically referred to as axillary hyperhidrosis. The armpit is one area where more sweat glands are found. In fact two kinds of sweat glands, the eccrine glands in the skin and the apocrine gland found in the armpit hair follicles. However, .apocrine glands secrete a thicker type of sweat than eccrine glands. This is the main reason why we seem to perspire more in the underarm area and why there is body odor.
A non-surgical and convenient solution to this type of hyperhidrosis is the use of armpit pads to lessen the discomfort and embarrassment of excessive underarm sweating. Armpit pads, liners, guards, shields or whatever terms these pads are called. They are attached to the garments to control sweating in the area and to prevent sweat stain or discoloration in the clothing. Armpit pads are made of absorbent 100% cotton materials and can be bought online or in supermarkets. There are disposable, reusable or washable brands of armpit pads. Some have included a sweat-controlling layer of vinyl materials for extra clothes protection. A paper backing can be peeled off so you can easily attach them to your clothes’ armhole. Other brands have designed an elastic arm straps attached to the body and not to the clothing. Colors of armpit pads may be skin tone, black and white. These pads are great alternative in controlling excessive sweating on a daily basis.
But armpit pads is only a temporary solution to axillary hyperhidrosis. If excessive sweating becomes a real problem affecting your self-esteem, find other solutions to remedy it.
The first step is to identify what causes your hyperhidrosis. The common causes may be puberty or menopause, heredity, some abnormalities in the functioning of the nerves, underlying medical disorders, medications, food eaten, weather and weight issue.
Then try some of the common cure to axillary hyperhidrosis. You can use antiperspirant powder and roll-ons, deodorants, lotions, and other topical solutions including the use of armpit or underarm pads, liners, shield or guards.
Alternative treatment can be acupuncture or botox. Those in acupuncture healing believe that because underarm sweating is induced by emotional anxiety, relaxing the nerves will reduce the over activity of the sweat glands. Before agreeing on acupuncture procedure, you must understand what it is all about. Also, it must be done by a registered acupuncturist. Patients of acupuncture have reported a reduced incidence of hyperhidrosis in the palms, feet, sole, face and armpits.
A nonsurgical and non-invasive treatment can be by botox (Botulinum Toxin) injection. The toxin is injected to the underarm area in order to block the over activity of the sweat glands in producing fluid. This may be expensive than armpit pads, but what is a few hundred bucks if it will spell your personal and professional joy and success.
Finally, if you have terrible hyperhidrosis problem, armpit pads won’t help and the ultimate solution is an Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) surgery. Before undergoing this surgery, be sure to ask your thoracic surgeon about the success of the procedure in controlling excessive sweating, duration of the surgery, permanent side effects, cost and other information to help you decide.
